Property appraiser notice or exemption denial
TRIM notice · Notice of Proposed Property Taxes · Exemption denial · Value Adjustment Board decision
- What it is
- The Truth in Millage notice each August states the assessed value and the proposed taxes; an exemption denial states that a homestead or other exemption was refused. Both are contested first at the county Value Adjustment Board, then in circuit court.
- The clock it starts
- Petition the Value Adjustment Board within 25 days after the Truth in Millage notice is mailed (30 days after an exemption denial). A circuit court action must be filed within 60 days after the Board's decision is rendered. Exemption applications are due March 1.
- What a response has to establish
- A petition that states the valuation evidence or the exemption facts (permanent residence, ownership on January 1), with the Board's procedural rules followed.
