Virginia · City or county commissioner of the revenue
Local assessment by the commissioner of the revenue or treasurer
Business license tax assessment · BPOL assessment · Business tangible personal property bill · Machinery and tools assessment
- What it is
- Local business taxes in Virginia are assessed locally: the business, professional and occupational license tax on gross receipts, the business tangible personal property tax, and the machinery and tools tax on manufacturers. Each has its own exclusions and its own correction procedure before the local official and then the circuit court.
- The clock it starts
- Apply to the commissioner of the revenue for correction within three years from the last day of the tax year or one year from the assessment, whichever is later. A circuit court application follows the same limits.
- What a response has to establish
- An application for correction that states the exclusion or classification relied on (out-of-state receipts, the manufacturing classification, the property class) with the receipts or asset detail.
